The Rich Culture and Heritage of Bangladesh

The culture of Bangladesh is enriched with thousands of years of tradition and diversity. The core of this culture lies in communal harmony and generosity. The Bengali language is the heart of this culture, gaining a unique status through the Language Movement of 1952. Among the major festivals, Pahela Baishakh (the Bengali New Year) is paramount, celebrated by everyone regardless of caste or religion. Religious festivals such as Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, Durga Puja, Buddha Purnima, and Christmas are observed with great pomp and splendor.

The rural folk culture of this country, including Baul songs, Jari, Sari, and Bhawaiya, is appreciated worldwide. The staple food of the people is rice and fish, leading to the popular proverb, "Bengali is made of fish and rice." The Nakshi Kantha (embroidered quilt) is a unique specimen of Bangladeshi handicraft, reflecting the fine craftsmanship of rural women. Traditionally, women wear Saris while men wear Lungis and Panjabis. Hospitality is an inherent and special quality of the people here. Rural sports like Ha-du-du, Kabaddi, and Boat Racing are integral parts of the heritage. Furthermore, the country's rich literature and fine arts have given Bangladesh a distinct identity on the global stage. Ultimately, unity in diversity is the primary characteristic of Bangladeshi culture.

Bengal tiger

Bengal tiger   In Bangladesh, tigers are now relegated to the forests of the Sundarbans and the Chittagong Hill Tracts . The Chittagong forest is contiguous with tiger habitat in India and Myanmar , but the tiger population is of unknown status . As of 2004, population estimates in Bangladesh ranged from 200 to 419 individuals, most of them in the Sundarbans. This region is the only mangrove habitat in this bioregion , where tigers survive, swimming between islands in the delta to hunt prey. Bangladesh's Forest Department is raising mangrove plantations supplying forage for spotted deer . Since 2001, afforestation has continued on a small scale in the Sundarbans. From October 2005 to January 2007, the first camera trap survey was conducted across six sites in the Bangladesh Sundarbans to estimate tiger population density. The average of these six sites provided an estimate of 3.7 tigers per 100 km 2 (39 sq mi). Since the Bangladesh Sundarbans is an area ...

Rickshaw art

Rickshaw art In Bangladesh, rickshaw art dates back to the 1950s and every conceivable part of the rickshaw is painted. In addition to geometric designs, there are depictions of flowers, birds and even popular actresses. The rickshaw can be decorated to show the driver's religious beliefs and sometimes even a commentary on current social issues. [1] In Bangladesh, rickshaw art is looked down upon by the elite population. [2] The three-wheeled pedicab, more commonly known as the rickshaw , has been around since the 1940s. Initially, they were undecorated, but starting in the late 1940s, the faces of movie stars began appearing as decorative motifs on shields at the back of the rickshaws along with a variety of floral paintings. The unique trend of rickshaw art started from Rajshahi and Dhaka in Bangladesh and took its own style in each district. For instance, Chittagong being a more pious city then Dhaka mostly had floral or scenery art whereas Comilla has plain rick...
