Bengali Verbs for Beginners

Learning common Bengali verbs is one of the easiest ways for beginners to start forming useful sentences. Bengali verbs change depending on tense, person, and level of formality, but beginners can start with a few everyday verbs.

1. করা — Kora — To Do

  • আমি কাজ করি। — Ami kaj kori. — I work/do work.

  • তুমি কী করো? — Tumi ki koro? — What do you do?

2. খাওয়া — Khaowa — To Eat

  • আমি ভাত খাই। — Ami bhat khai. — I eat rice.

  • তুমি কি খেয়েছ? — Tumi ki kheyecho? — Have you eaten?

3. যাওয়া — Jaowa — To Go

  • আমি স্কুলে যাই। — Ami skule jai. — I go to school.

  • সে বাজারে যায়। — Se bajare jay. — He/She goes to the market.

4. আসা — Asha — To Come

  • তুমি কখন আসবে? — Tumi kokhon asbe? — When will you come?

  • সে বাড়িতে এসেছে। — Se barite esheche. — He/She has come home.

5. দেখা — Dekha — To See

  • আমি সিনেমা দেখি। — Ami cinema dekhi. — I watch a movie.

  • সে আমাকে দেখে। — Se amake dekhe. — He/She sees me.

6. বলা — Bola — To Say/Speak

  • আমি সত্যি বলি। — Ami sotti boli. — I tell the truth.

  • সে কী বলেছে? — Se ki boleche? — What did he/she say?

7. লেখা — Lekha — To Write

  • আমি বাংলা লিখি। — Ami Bangla likhi. — I write Bengali.

  • সে একটি চিঠি লিখেছে। — Se ekti chithi likheche. — He/She has written a letter.

8. পড়া — Pora — To Read/Study

  • আমি বাংলা পড়ি। — Ami Bangla pori. — I study/read Bengali.

  • সে বই পড়ছে। — Se boi porchhe. — He/She is reading a book.

9. শোনা — Shona — To Hear/Listen

  • আমি গান শুনি। — Ami gan shuni. — I listen to music.

  • তুমি আমার কথা শোনো। — Tumi amar kotha shono. — Listen to me.

10. ঘুমানো — Ghumano — To Sleep

  • আমি রাতে ঘুমাই। — Ami rate ghumai. — I sleep at night.

  • বাচ্চাটি ঘুমাচ্ছে। — Bacchati ghumachhe. — The child is sleeping.

11. জানা — Jana — To Know

  • আমি জানি। — Ami jani. — I know.

  • তুমি কি জানো? — Tumi ki jano? — Do you know?

12. বোঝা — Bojha — To Understand

  • আমি বুঝি। — Ami bujhi. — I understand.

  • তুমি কি বুঝতে পারছ? — Tumi ki bujhte parchho? — Can you understand?

Quick Practice

Try making simple sentences with these verbs:

আমি + verb

  • আমি খাই। — I eat.

  • আমি যাই। — I go.

  • আমি আসি। — I come.

  • আমি পড়ি। — I study/read.

  • আমি লিখি। — I write.

  • আমি দেখি। — I see/watch.

  • আমি শুনি। — I listen.

Tip: Don't try to memorize dozens of Bengali verbs at once. Start with 10–15 everyday verbs, practice them in short sentences, and gradually learn how they change in the past, present, and future tense.
